Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing is initiating a recall affecting more than one million of its vehicles, including various Toyota and Lexus models, due to a potential defect in the rearview camera system. The issue stems from the software within the Parking Assist Electronic Control Unit (ECU), which could cause the rearview image to freeze or fail to display, potentially leading to an increased risk of a crash during backing maneuvers. This recall impacts approximately 1,024,407 vehicles.

The defect specifically concerns vehicles equipped with a Parking Assist ECU containing particular software logic. The problem manifests in two ways: the rearview image might briefly freeze when reverse is engaged shortly after the vehicle is turned on, or the image may not appear at all on the next ignition cycle if the vehicle is turned on and off rapidly. These malfunctions mean that the affected vehicles may not meet the rear visibility requirements mandated by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 111. The recalled vehicles include a wide range of models and model years, with production dates spanning from late 2021 through September 2025, depending on the specific model.
Among the affected models are the 2024-2026 Lexus RX Plug-in Hybrid, 2024-2026 Lexus TX Plug-in Hybrid, 2024-2025 Toyota Land Cruiser, 2024-2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid, 2023-2026 Toyota Crown, 2024-2025 Lexus LC, 2023-2025 Subaru Solterra, 2023-2025 Lexus ES, 2023-2024 Toyota Prius Prime, 2024-2026 Lexus TX Hybrid, 2023-2025 Lexus LS, 2025-2025 Toyota Sienna Hybrid, 2023-2023 Lexus NX Plug-in Hybrid, 2024-2026 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid, 2025-2025 Toyota Crown Signia, 2024-2025 Lexus GX, 2024-2026 Lexus TX, 2022-2025 Lexus NX Hybrid, 2023-2025 Lexus RZ, 2025-2025 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid, 2023-2025 Toyota Highlander, 2023-2025 Lexus RX Hybrid, 2023-2025 Lexus LS Hybrid, 2024-2026 Toyota Grand Highlander, 2023-2024 Toyota RAV4 Prime, 2023-2025 Toyota RAV4, 2023-2025 Toyota bZ4X, 2023-2025 Lexus ES Hybrid, 2023-2025 Toyota Highlander Hybrid, 2022-2025 Lexus LX, 2023-2025 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, 2024-2025 Lexus LC Hybrid, 2023-2025 Toyota Mirai, 2025-2025 Lexus LX Hybrid, 2023-2026 Lexus RX, 2023-2024 Toyota Venza Hybrid, 2023-2025 Toyota Prius, 2022-2025 Lexus NX, and 2025-2025 Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid.
The recall process will involve notifying owners of the affected vehicles. Dealers will then update the Parking Assist ECU software free of charge to rectify the issue. Owners who have previously paid for repairs related to this specific problem are advised to seek reimbursement from Toyota or Subaru, in accordance with their respective general reimbursement plans. Vehicle identification numbers (VINs) will be searchable to determine if a specific vehicle is included in the recall. Toyota plans to begin dealer notification on October 30, 2025, with interim owner notification scheduled for December 16-31, 2025, and phased remedy owner notification to follow.
