According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, Werner Paddles has issued a recall for approximately 700 Stealth and Covert kayak paddles sold in the United States and about 25 in Canada due to a significant safety concern. The paddles have been found to break during use, creating a potential drowning hazard for consumers. The brand name “Werner” is visible on decals on both blades, with the specific model name printed on the right paddle blade. These paddles are constructed from black carbon fiber.

The recall encompasses Werner Stealth and Covert kayak paddles that were sold between October 2023 and August 2025. Consumers purchased these paddles from various retailers nationwide, including 4 Corners River Sports, Outdoor New England, The River Store, and Alder Creek Kayak Supply, as well as online through Wernerpaddles.com, Riversports.com, Aldercreek.com, Outdoornewengland.com, Theriverstore.com, and other e-commerce platforms. The price for these paddles ranged from $560 to $470.
Werner Paddles has reported receiving 80 instances where the paddles have broken during use. Despite the number of reported incidents, no injuries have been associated with this defect.
Consumers who own the recalled Werner Stealth or Covert kayak paddles are strongly advised to cease using them immediately. To receive a full refund, which will be issued in the form of a check or a store credit redeemable online, customers must contact Werner Paddles. This can be done by calling toll-free at 800-275-3311 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Central Time, or by emailing stealthcovert@wernerpaddles.com. Further instructions and a recall form are available on the company’s website at https://wernerpaddles.com/pages/covert-stealth-recall-consumers. As part of the refund process, consumers will be required to destroy the recalled paddle by cutting it into four equal pieces, with cuts made halfway through each blade and halfway through the left and right sides of the shaft. A photograph of the destroyed paddle must then be uploaded to the Werner website.
