According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Milwaukee Tool is recalling approximately 90,860 M18 FUEL Top Handle Chainsaws sold in the United States and an additional 7,500 units in Canada. The recall affects chainsaws with either a 12-inch or 14-inch bar, specifically those with catalog number 2826-20 and a serial number beginning with “A.” The issue stems from a potential malfunction where the chainsaw’s chain brake may fail to engage, creating a significant laceration hazard for users.

The affected products are battery-operated chainsaws designed for use with Milwaukee’s M18 batteries. They were available for purchase either as individual units, which include a chain, bar cover, and blade wrench, or as kits that also contain two M18 batteries and an M18 battery charger. Consumers can identify the catalog number on the upper right portion of the product’s nameplate and the serial number on the upper left. The specific serial number break is indicated by the fourth digit of the serial number. These chainsaws were sold between March 2023 and September 2024 at retailers such as Home Depot and other home improvement stores, as well as online through homedepot.com and other distribution partners. The price point for the tool only was around $350, while kits including batteries and a charger sold for approximately $790.
Milwaukee Tool is offering a free repair for all affected chainsaws. Consumers who own one of these recalled models are urged to immediately cease using the product. To initiate the repair process, customers must register their product online at https://service.milwaukeetool.com/support/eservice. Upon registration, they will receive a prepaid shipping label to return their chainsaw to Milwaukee Tool for the necessary repair. The company has received two reports detailing the chain brake’s failure to activate, including one instance that resulted in a lacerated finger.
