The collection point for used pumpkins will be at Ida Lee Park. Residents are directed to drop off their pumpkins in the parking lot adjacent to the A.V. Symington Aquatic Center. From this location, the pumpkins will be transported to a dedicated food waste composting facility. This process diverts organic material from landfills, where it would otherwise decompose and generate methane, a significant greenhouse gas. Instead, the pumpkins will be transformed into a valuable soil amendment, providing nutrients that can enhance local soil quality and foster future plant development.

This program offers citizens a straightforward method for responsibly discarding their seasonal decorations while simultaneously supporting the Town’s broader environmental objectives. To ensure the success of the composting process, residents are asked to remove all non-organic materials from their pumpkins prior to drop-off. This includes candles, paint, and any other decorative elements. Only the pumpkins themselves should be placed in the collection area.

Further inquiries regarding this composting initiative can be directed via email to dmoran@leesburgva.gov.
