The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), in collaboration with nearly 4,000 law enforcement agencies nationwide, is hosting the 29th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day this Saturday, October 25th. Between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Americans will have the opportunity to anonymously dispose of unwanted, expired, or unused prescription medications at approximately 4,000 collection sites across the United States. This initiative aims to prevent the misuse of prescription drugs, which can lead to accidental overdoses and poisonings.

The program provides a convenient and secure method for individuals to remove potentially dangerous medications from their homes. Since its inception in 2010, National Prescription Drug Take Back Day has collected over 20 million pounds of unused medications. The DEA and its partners will accept various forms of prescription drugs, including tablets, capsules, and patches. Liquid medications should be sealed in their original containers. However, syringes, sharps, and illicit drugs will not be collected. This effort is particularly important as opioids, such as oxycodone, hydrocodone, codeine, and morphine, are among the most commonly misused prescription pain relievers, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

For those unable to participate in the upcoming event, numerous pharmacies, hospitals, businesses, and police departments offer year-round safe medication disposal options. Further information about permanent drop boxes can be found by visiting Every Day is Take Back Day. Additional details about this Saturday’s event, including the location of a collection site nearest you, can be found at http://www.DEATakeBack.com.
