Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) has initiated a voluntary safety recall for approximately 298,439 model year 2013-2016 Dodge Dart vehicles. According to the manufacturer’s submission to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a defect in the transmission shift cable can lead to a failure to maintain its connection to the transmission. This malfunction could result in an unexpected and irreversible loss of the PARK function or unintended vehicle movement, posing a significant crash risk.

The affected vehicles were produced between February 24, 2012, and October 4, 2016. The issue stems from a potential failure of the gearshift control cable, manufactured by Dura Automotive Systems Inc. While the specific cause of the failure after a previous recall remedy is still under investigation, the potential consequence is serious: a vehicle could roll away without warning. This poses a direct safety risk, potentially leading to crashes, injuries, or even fatalities, especially to individuals outside the vehicle. Notably, there are no prior warning signs associated with this specific defect.

Chrysler’s investigation into this condition began in June 2025, prompted by concerns about post-remedy failures related to a previous recall (NHTSA Recall ID 19V293 / FCA US Recall ID V34). NHTSA had observed an increase in reports alleging issues with the remedy for the prior recall and had formally requested information from Chrysler. While Chrysler has been aware of warranty claims potentially related to this new issue, as of September 24, 2025, the company states it is not aware of any customer assistance cases, field reports, service records, accidents, or injuries directly linked to this specific defect.

Owners of the affected 2013-2016 Dodge Dart vehicles are advised not to park outside if possible, due to the risk of unintended vehicle movement. The remedy for this recall is currently under development. Chrysler plans to begin notifying dealers about the recall on or about October 16, 2025, with owner notifications commencing around November 6, 2025. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) will be searchable for recall status beginning October 16, 2025, allowing owners to check if their specific vehicle is included in this safety campaign. Further details regarding the remedy and repair schedule will be communicated to owners once they become available.
