Responding to a call at approximately 10:40 p.m., the Hagerstown Fire Department discovered two separate fires burning near the main entrance of the establishment. Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames within minutes and subsequently contacted the Office of the State Fire Marshals to lead the investigation. Deputy State Fire Marshals arrived on the scene and confirmed that the fires were deliberately set. Evidence, including surveillance footage from the bookstore, captured images of the suspect initiating the blazes.

Investigators, aided by witness accounts describing a man setting the fires, were able to disseminate a description of Boateng to local law enforcement. Shortly thereafter, deputies from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office apprehended Boateng on an unrelated charge at a nearby Sheetz convenience store. During his arrest, Boateng was found to be in possession of a lighter and was wearing clothing consistent with the surveillance footage. He was subsequently taken to the Washington County Detention Center. Boateng is currently being held pending a bond hearing.
