According to a safety recall report submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing is initiating a recall affecting approximately 393,838 of its 2022-2025 Tundra Hybrid, 2023-2025 Sequoia Hybrid, and 2022-2025 Tundra vehicles. The issue stems from a software defect within the multimedia display that can cause the rearview camera image to be obstructed during backing maneuvers, potentially increasing the risk of a crash.

The defect specifically impacts the 14-inch multimedia display, which presents the rearview image using synchronized camera serial data. When the camera view changes, the synchronization signal may momentarily pause. During this pause, unexpected signal noise can cause internal counters to advance independently. This desynchronization can result in the display showing a half-green, full-green, or entirely black screen instead of the intended rearview image. This malfunction means the vehicles do not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 111, which mandates adequate rear visibility.
The recall encompasses 105,005 units of the 2022-2025 Toyota Tundra Hybrid, produced between March 15, 2022, and July 25, 2025. Additionally, 67,978 units of the 2023-2025 Toyota Sequoia Hybrid, manufactured from August 31, 2022, to July 29, 2025, are included. The largest segment of the recall involves 220,855 units of the 2022-2025 Toyota Tundra, with production dates ranging from November 2, 2021, to July 21, 2025. While these production periods are specified, Toyota notes that not all vehicles within these ranges were sold in the U.S., and other Toyota and Lexus models equipped with different multimedia displays or software are not affected. The multimedia display components were manufactured by Panasonic Automotive Systems de Mexico.
Toyota’s investigation into this issue began after receiving reports in 2022 of the problematic display behavior. Following extensive testing by the supplier from January through April 2025, it was determined that signal noise during a camera view change could lead to the lane counter desynchronization. Further testing with both the original and a modified software version from May to September 2025 confirmed that the issue occurred with the original software but was resolved with the updated version. Consequently, Toyota determined on September 25, 2025, that the vehicles contained software that could lead to a safety defect prior to sale.
To address this defect, Toyota will update the multimedia display software in the affected vehicles free of charge. This software update will not only fix the rearview display issue but also include improvements for a potential minor delay in the rearview image appearing after the vehicle is put into reverse. Owners who have previously paid for repairs related to this specific issue may be eligible for reimbursement according to Toyota’s General Reimbursement Plan.
Owners of the affected Toyota Tundra and Sequoia models will be notified by mail between November 16 and November 30, 2025. Toyota began notifying its dealers on October 1, 2025, and vehicle identification numbers (VINs) will be searchable for recall status. Owners are advised to contact their local Toyota dealer to schedule the software update.
