According to Tesla’s safety recall report submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the electric vehicle manufacturer is recalling approximately 260 Model Year 2026 Tesla Model Y vehicles. These vehicles, manufactured between February 6, 2025, and July 26, 2025, may have been delivered with inoperable reverse lamps. The issue stems from a potential loss of continuity in the rear lamp circuit due to improperly seated connector or terminal pins, which can prevent one or both reverse lamps from illuminating when the vehicle is shifted into reverse.

The defect poses a safety risk by increasing the potential for collisions. While drivers can still rely on rearview mirrors and cameras for visibility, and the vehicle emits an audible alert when reversing as required by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 141, the absence of illuminated reverse lamps can reduce the awareness of other road users to the vehicle’s reversing maneuver. Tesla is not aware of any collisions, injuries, or fatalities resulting from this condition, although they have identified 94 warranty claims and 2 field reports related to the non-compliance. A warning notification will appear on the instrument cluster when the vehicle is shifted into reverse if this condition is present.
The affected components include the rear fascia harness and the left and right rear fascia lamps. The recall remedy will involve Tesla inspecting the reverse lamp housing and rear fascia harness on all affected vehicles. If necessary, defective components will be repaired or replaced at no cost to the customer to ensure compliance with FMVSS 108. Production changes to the lamp housing and harness hardware were implemented by Tesla’s supplier beginning July 28, 2025. Additionally, enhanced factory checks were introduced at Tesla facilities on August 11, 2025, to better detect reverse lamp failures.
Tesla plans to notify all its stores and service centers about the recall on or around October 6, 2025. Owner notification letters are scheduled to be mailed by November 30, 2025. Since all involved vehicles are still covered under their new vehicle warranty, Tesla does not anticipate a separate reimbursement program for owners.
