Matthew L. Harvey has officially taken the oath of office as the United States Attorney for the Northern District of West Virginia. His appointment follows a nomination by President Trump on June 30, 2025, and subsequent confirmation by the U.S. Senate on October 7, 2025. U.S. District Judge Gina M. Groh administered the oath to Mr. Harvey, marking his official assumption of the top federal law enforcement position in the region.

In his capacity as U.S. Attorney, Mr. Harvey will lead the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of West Virginia, which includes offices in Wheeling, Martinsburg, Clarksburg, and Elkins. He will oversee a staff of 47 individuals, comprising 20 attorneys and 27 support personnel. The office is responsible for prosecuting federal crimes across the 32 counties within the district, as well as defending the United States in civil litigation and pursuing the collection of debts owed to the federal government. Mr. Harvey’s prior experience includes serving as the Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney for 12 years, where he concentrated on prosecuting drug and violent crime cases. He also has previous experience as an assistant prosecuting attorney in Berkeley and Kanawha Counties, as well as time spent in private law practice. Mr. Harvey holds a B.S. in Business Administration from Bluefield State University and earned his Juris Doctorate from Appalachia School of Law. His role is crucial in upholding federal law and ensuring public safety within the Northern District of West Virginia.
