Nationally, substance use disorders and mental health issues impact millions of Americans annually. In Franklin County, an estimated 31,000 residents are impacted by these challenges. Local organizations, including the Franklin/Fulton Drug and Alcohol department and the Healthy Communities Partnership, are actively implementing evidence-based educational programs and disseminating vital information. These initiatives have reached over 12,000 individuals in the county between January 2024 and September 2025, demonstrating a concerted effort to combat these issues.
Evidence from recent data indicates that these prevention strategies are proving effective, particularly among the county’s youth. The latest Pennsylvania Area Youth Survey (PAYS) reveals a notable decrease in substance use among Franklin County adolescents. Specifically, there has been an 11.7% reduction in lifetime alcohol use, a 5.9% decrease in cannabis use, and a significant 12.9% reduction in vaping within a 30-day period. Furthermore, community engagement in prevention efforts has seen a remarkable 78% increase over the past five years, signaling a growing collective commitment to a healthier future.
The commissioners encourage all Franklin County residents to actively participate in and support substance use prevention and mental health initiatives, not only throughout October but year-round. Continued community involvement and support are crucial for sustaining and expanding these effective preventative strategies.
