This initiative aims to combat identity theft, a prevalent issue affecting millions of Americans annually. Sensitive documents, when discarded improperly, can become easy targets for identity thieves. To help residents securely dispose of such materials, the town is offering on-site shredding services. Each household will be permitted to bring up to three boxes or bags of documents for shredding, with each container equivalent in size to a standard file storage box. It is important to note that the event may conclude earlier than scheduled if the shredding vehicles reach their capacity.
In addition to providing a secure way to dispose of confidential papers, the event will also serve as a collection point for non-perishable food items benefiting Loudoun Hunger Relief. Attendees are encouraged to bring canned goods and other non-perishable food items to donate to those in need within the community. Information regarding acceptable food donations can be found on the Loudoun Hunger Relief website.
Portable shredding units will be on-site to process the documents. Annually, these types of events typically result in the destruction of approximately 10,000 pounds of sensitive paperwork, which is then subsequently recycled. For a comprehensive list of items that can be shredded and for guidance on protecting oneself from identity theft, residents are directed to visit the Town of Leesburg’s official website at http://www.leesburgva.gov/shredevent.
