The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) have officially launched Cybersecurity Awareness Month for 2025, a nationwide campaign aimed at bolstering the nation’s defenses against evolving cyber threats. This annual initiative, led by CISA, will equip partner agencies and the private sector with essential tools, support, and information to protect critical infrastructure and services. The overarching theme for this year’s campaign is “Building a Cyber Strong America,” emphasizing CISA’s renewed mission to be the foremost cybersecurity agency for the United States.

The campaign seeks to engage all levels of government and businesses, from state, local, tribal, and territorial (SLTT) entities to small and medium-sized businesses and those involved in vital supply chains. It encourages widespread participation in taking proactive cybersecurity measures to safeguard the nation in an era of persistent and sophisticated cyber threats.
Cyber threats pose a continuous risk to national security and daily life. DHS and CISA are urging all citizens, government organizations, and businesses to maintain a heightened state of vigilance and to actively work towards mitigating cyber threats before they can inflict damage. This year’s campaign particularly highlights the importance of securing the foundational services that underpin American society, including access to clean water, reliable power, robust communication networks, a stable food supply, and secure financial systems.
Key to this effort is the resilience of critical infrastructure, regardless of whether it is managed by public or private entities, or by supply chain partners. Disruptions to these systems can have far-reaching consequences that impact communities across the country. CISA is specifically prioritizing the security and resilience of small and medium-sized businesses, as well as SLTT governments, which are instrumental in facilitating the everyday systems and services that sustain daily life. This includes ensuring the integrity of clean water delivery, secure transportation networks, accessible quality healthcare, reliable financial transactions, and swift communication capabilities. The objective is to make resilience a standard practice, thereby contributing to America’s overall safety, strength, and security.
To help individuals and organizations enhance their cybersecurity posture, CISA and DHS are recommending several fundamental best practices:
- Recognize and Report Phishing: Be aware of deceptive emails and messages and report suspicious attempts to avoid the spread of scams.
- Use Strong Passwords: Implement long, random, and unique passwords for all accounts to significantly enhance protection.
- Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Add an extra layer of security by requiring multiple forms of verification for account access.
- Update Software Regularly: Install software updates promptly to patch known vulnerabilities that attackers could exploit.
For organizations, additional steps can be taken to bolster resilience:
- Enable System Logging: Activate logging features on systems to effectively detect unusual or suspicious activity.
- Back Up Data: Regularly back up important data to ensure swift recovery in the event of an incident.
- Encrypt Sensitive Information: Implement encryption for sensitive data, rendering it unreadable and useless if compromised. Encryption should be a core component of any security strategy.
Throughout October, DHS and CISA are calling on every sector of the nation to actively participate in the mission of “Building a Cyber Strong America,” underscoring that individual actions are crucial to collective security. Comprehensive resources, toolkits, and practical guidance are available on the CISA website at cisa.gov/cybersecurity-awareness-month.
