DEARBORN, MI – Ford Motor Company is initiating a safety recall affecting approximately 115,539 of its 2020-2021 F-Super Duty trucks due to a defect that could lead to a loss of steering. The recall, reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), addresses a steering column upper shaft that may separate.

The potentially affected vehicles were manufactured between February 19, 2019, and September 30, 2020, and were assembled at Ford’s Kentucky Truck Plant. The issue stems from the steering column upper shaft’s hard slider not meeting anti-pull apart load specifications. This defect means the shaft could separate, potentially resulting in a complete loss of steering control, thereby increasing the risk of a crash. Ford has indicated that there are no dashboard warning lights or other alerts to indicate this condition is present.

Ford’s internal review, which began in June 2025 following reports of steering column separations, revealed that a single primary staking method was used on the upper shaft design from the start of the 2020 model year until February 2021. At that point, a second staking was added to the design. Analysis of customer claims indicated that all known incidents occurred on vehicles manufactured in March 2020 or earlier. Further investigation into manufacturing data by Ford and its supplier, HL Mando of South Korea, confirmed a correlation between a shift in primary staking load and depth and the occurrence of this issue. Statistical analysis supported the significant difference in parts manufactured before and after March 2020, with parts manufactured after this date demonstrating higher pull-apart force capabilities.

While Ford is aware of several warranty claims, field reports, and customer hotline reports related to this concern, the company states it is not aware of any accidents or injuries resulting from this specific defect.

Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by mail and advised to bring their trucks to a Ford or Lincoln dealership. At the dealership, the steering column upper shaft will be inspected for signs of extension. If a part fails this inspection, it will be replaced. Parts that pass the inspection will undergo a modification to enhance their retention capabilities. These repairs will be provided at no cost to the vehicle owner. The remedy aims to ensure that the repaired or replaced steering column upper shafts meet the required anti-pull apart load specifications.

Ford expects to notify its dealers about the recall on September 23, 2025. Interim owner notification letters are scheduled to be mailed between October 6 and October 10, 2025, with remedy notification letters to follow between December 26 and December 31, 2025. Vehicle owners will be able to check their VIN for applicability on September 23, 2025. Ford advises owners of affected vehicles not to drive their trucks and to park them outside until the remedy is available.

For specific information regarding their vehicle’s eligibility for this recall, owners can contact Ford’s toll-free line at 1-866-436-7332 or reach out to their local Ford or Lincoln dealer.
