BMW of North America is initiating a voluntary safety recall for over 196,000 vehicles due to a potential defect in the engine starter system that could lead to a fire risk. The issue, identified by BMW, involves the engine starter’s electrical relay which can corrode over time if exposed to water. This corrosion can compromise the electrical connection, hindering the vehicle’s ability to start and, in more severe cases, potentially cause a short circuit and overheating of the starter. Such an event could lead to a thermal incident whether the vehicle is in operation or parked.

The recall encompasses a range of BMW models and one Toyota model. The affected BMW vehicles include the 2019-2021 BMW 3 Series, with 80,318 units potentially involved; the 2020-2022 BMW X3, with 70,887 units; the 2020-2022 BMW X4, with 6,716 units; the 2020-2022 BMW 5 Series, including 530i and 530i xDrive models, totaling 22,804 units; the 2020-2022 BMW Z4, with 4,539 units; the 2021-2022 BMW 4 Series Convertible models (430i and 430i xDrive), comprising 3,152 units; the 2021-2021 BMW 4 Series Coupe models (430i and 430i xDrive), numbering 6,468 units; the 2022 BMW 2 Series (230i Coupe), with a single unit affected; and the 2022 BMW 4 Series (430i Gran Coupe), also with a single unit. Additionally, the 2020-2022 Toyota Supra, with 1,469 units, is included in the recall.
The potential defect originates from an engine starter supplied by VALEO, a French-based company. The issue was first flagged through continuous field monitoring, with specific thermal events reported in a 2021 BMW 5 Series in November 2023 and a 2020 BMW 3 Series in March 2024. Subsequent investigations revealed that these vehicles, and others in the recall population, were equipped with the same engine starter. While initial theories considered external damage or improper repairs as potential causes, further analysis in December of the previous year led to the hypothesis of water ingress into the starter. Comprehensive testing and vehicle assembly data analysis were conducted throughout early 2025 to pinpoint the affected production range and the specific component. BMW has stated that it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this issue, and for the Toyota Supra vehicles, Toyota has reported zero field technical reports or warranty claims related to this condition.
BMW will notify owners of the affected vehicles by first-class mail, providing instructions to schedule an appointment with an authorized BMW dealer for the remedy. The repair will involve replacing the engine starter with a redesigned component, free of charge. Owners are strongly advised to park their affected vehicles outside and away from structures until the necessary repair is completed, due to the potential fire risk. The manufacturer will begin notifying dealers on September 23, 2025, with owner notifications scheduled to commence on November 14, 2025. Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) lookup for recall eligibility will also be available from November 14, 2025. Owners who have already paid for this repair prior to the official recall notification may be eligible for reimbursement, according to BMW Group’s reimbursement plan.
