Dear Neighbors,

As a fellow resident of Sharpsburg and a parent raising a young child here, I care deeply about the safety, peace, and historical character of our town. I am writing to share my perspective on recent discussions regarding the future use of Green Hill Farm.

First, I want to recognize that our mayor is doing the job he was elected to do: protecting the integrity of our easements, preserving our community’s history, and ensuring that Sharpsburg remains a safe place to live. It saddens me to see criticism directed his way when his role is simply to carry out these responsibilities.

From my understanding, the property in question is bound by an easement intended to keep it as agricultural land. This does not prevent farming, planting, or selling crops grown there — in fact, that use is fully consistent with the easement. However, shifting the property into an event venue or recreational space appears to go beyond what was originally intended.

I also believe there are important safety considerations. Hosting large events with liquor sales requires careful oversight and experience. Without a clear plan for managing traffic, alcohol service, and community safety, there is a real risk of harm — whether that be noise, property damage, or accidents that could affect nearby families like mine.

I respect any property owner’s desire to create revenue from their land, but I feel strongly that it should be done in a way that honors the spirit of the easement and protects the peace of our community. I have also noticed that when questions are raised by either the town or community members, responses have sometimes been defensive or hostile. I believe respectful conversation is the only way we can move forward together.

Sharpsburg is a place that many of us chose because of its small-town charm, history, and sense of community. I hope that as neighbors, we can keep our discussions constructive, our concerns respectful, and our focus on what makes this town special.

Thank you for taking the time to hear my perspective.

Sincerely,
Shannon – A Concerned Neighbor
