Historic Crown Stone Farm Named Washington County’s 2025-2026 Farm of the Year

Washington County, Maryland, is celebrating Crown Stone Farm as its recipient of the 2025-2026 Farm of the Year award. This designation honors a farm that demonstrates outstanding achievements in agriculture, encompassing production, conservation, community involvement, and a steadfast dedication to the farming profession. The program aims to foster a deeper appreciation for the complexities and contributions of modern farmers.

Crown Stone Farm, located in Clear Spring, Maryland, is co-owned and operated by John and Pam Schnebly, alongside JC and Beth Schnebly. The family cultivates nearly 500 acres of farmland, comprising 300 acres they own and an additional 200 acres they lease. This expansive operation is built upon a rich agricultural legacy, as Crown Stone Farm has been continuously in operation as a dairy farm since 1817, marking it as one of Washington County’s oldest continually running dairy establishments. The farm’s name is derived from a historic “crown stone,” a Mason-Dixon five-mile marker that remains a feature on the property.

The Schnebly family manages a herd of approximately 450 cattle, with 200 of these being lactating cows. Their collective milk production exceeds 80,000 pounds weekly. To ensure the optimal health and productivity of their herd, the farm employs a high degree of self-sufficiency by growing its own corn, soybeans, and grains to create a specialized Total Mixed Ration (TMR) feed blend. Further contributing to their operational control and quality standards, they also produce hay and straw. Beyond robust production, Crown Stone Farm actively implements sustainable agricultural practices. The farm utilizes cover crop programs designed to enhance soil health, mitigate erosion, and preserve the land for future agricultural use.

Community engagement and agricultural education are also key tenets of Crown Stone Farm’s operations. The Schnebly family regularly hosts school groups, community organizations, and agricultural associations, providing tours and educational opportunities. Notably, the farm welcomed over 300 visitors from across the United States and internationally during a tour organized by the National Guernsey Association, highlighting their commitment to sharing agricultural knowledge. The Schnebly family’s commitment to agricultural excellence, conservation, and community involvement reflects the enduring values of farming in Washington County.

As recognition for this significant honor, Crown Stone Farm will receive a Farm of the Year plaque for display at their farm. They will also be acknowledged with a proclamation from the Board of County Commissioners. The award includes an on-farm photoshoot and custom Farm of the Year Carhartt jackets. Furthermore, Crown Stone Farm will be prominently featured in the 2025-2026 agricultural marketing campaign spearheaded by the Washington County Department of Business and Economic Development.
