According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), an arrest detainer has been lodged for Jose Javier Coronado-Meza, a 25-year-old Venezuelan national facing charges in the alleged execution-style murder of Gregori Arias in Chicago. The incident, which occurred on June 22 in the city’s South Shore neighborhood, has led to Coronado-Meza being charged with murder, concealing a homicidal death, aggravated unlawful restraint, kidnapping, and unlawful possession of a weapon.

ICE officials stated that Coronado-Meza is accused of shooting Arias in the head and subsequently attempting to conceal the crime by transporting the victim’s body to a construction site with the intent of burying the remains in concrete. Authorities also allege that Coronado-Meza made statements boasting about his involvement in the killing. The detainer aims to prevent Coronado-Meza’s release from Cook County Jail, where he is currently held pending trial, into the wider community.

Records indicate that Coronado-Meza first entered the United States near Laredo, Texas, on September 4, 2023. He was processed for expedited removal and subsequently removed from the country. Approximately one month later, he is reported to have re-entered the United States illegally. On October 18, 2023, he was taken into ICE custody and detained for 166 days at the Stewart Detention Center. An immigration judge issued a final order of removal on December 4, 2023. Despite this order, ICE states that Coronado-Meza was released into American communities on April 1, 2024.

ICE has expressed concerns regarding the cooperation of Illinois as a “sanctuary state” with their enforcement efforts.
