The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to various Deep-brand frozen products. The investigation, which began in July 2025, has led to expanded recalls and ongoing efforts to identify the source of contamination.

Initially, on July 16, 2025, Chetak LLC Group initiated a recall for multiple lots of Deep-brand frozen Sprouted Mat (Moth) and Moong (Mung) beans in 1-lb packages. This recall was prompted by routine product sampling conducted by the FDA in May 2025, which found Salmonella in these products. Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) analysis confirmed that the detected strain of Salmonella matched the strain causing illnesses in the outbreak.

The investigation expanded on August 22, 2025, when the FDA issued an advisory for consumers and retailers to avoid Deep-brand Premium Select Frozen SURTI UNDHIU MIX in 12-oz packages, specifically lot code IN25158K with a Use By date of December 6, 2026. This expansion was based on product sample results indicating Salmonella contamination, with WGS analysis confirming the presence of the outbreak strain in this product as well. Further testing of Deep-brand frozen Singoda (Water Chestnut) also found Salmonella, though the strain did not match the outbreak strain.

On September 8, 2025, Chetak LLC Group further expanded its recall to encompass several additional lots of Deep-brand frozen vegetables and fruit products. Consumers are urged to check their freezers for any recalled Deep-brand products and dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase.

To date, the outbreak has resulted in 11 reported illnesses across 10 states, including Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and Washington. Four individuals have been hospitalized, and no deaths have been reported. The last illness onset was recorded on June 24, 2025.

Consumers, restaurants, and retailers are strongly advised not to consume, sell, or serve any recalled Deep-brand frozen products. Those who may have come into contact with the recalled items are instructed to thoroughly clean and sanitize all surfaces, utensils, and containers that may have been touched. Handwashing with hot, soapy water is recommended before and after handling the products.

Individuals experiencing symptoms of Salmonella infection, which typically include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, should contact their healthcare provider. Symptoms usually appear 12 to 72 hours after consuming contaminated food and can last four to seven days. Young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk of severe illness.

The FDA has placed the manufacturer for the recalled frozen sprouted beans on increased screening for ready-to-eat products entering the U.S. The production and distribution of affected products have been suspended while the investigation into the source of the contamination continues. Products involved in the recall were distributed nationwide through retail stores and mail orders.
