BMW of North America, LLC is initiating a safety recall affecting 1,327 model year 2026 BMW X5 and X7 vehicles due to a potential defect in the windshield sealing process. The issue could allow water to enter the vehicle, potentially affecting electrical components and increasing the risk of a thermal event.

Article continues after these messages…

The recall specifically targets BMW X7 vehicles manufactured between August 5 and August 11, 2025, with 316 units potentially affected. Additionally, 2026 BMW X5 vehicles produced during the same August 5-11, 2025 timeframe are also included. This includes 137 plug-in hybrid models and 874 spark ignition fuel models, bringing the total number of potentially impacted X5 vehicles to 1,011. The defect arises from a windshield that may not have been assembled to proper specifications, impacting its seal to the vehicle body.

The safety risk associated with this defect centers on the potential for water ingress at the right-hand A-pillar. If water enters and travels down the A-pillar, it could come into contact with a power distribution box and an electronic control unit. Such moisture exposure to these critical electrical components could lead to functional failures, including issues with headlights or door-closing mechanisms. In more severe scenarios, a short circuit could occur, and in extreme cases, this could result in a thermal event, even when the vehicle’s ignition is off, thereby posing an increased risk of injury.

The issue was identified on August 11, 2025, during end-of-line quality assurance testing when it was observed that water was able to enter the vehicle’s interior near the A-pillar. A subsequent review of the manufacturing process revealed a change in the material properties of the windshield bonding material without a corresponding adjustment to the joining process. This discrepancy was found to be the cause of the potential sealing issue. BMW conducted testing to assess the likelihood and extent of water ingress and its potential impact on vehicle operation. The results confirmed that water could enter the vehicle and potentially affect electrical components.

BMW has stated that they are not aware of any thermal events, accidents, or injuries related to this specific issue. To address the defect, BMW will inspect the windshield seal on affected vehicles. If any leaks are detected, the seal will be reworked, and any potentially affected vehicle control units and wiring will be replaced. Owners of the affected vehicles will be notified by First Class mail and will be instructed to schedule an appointment with an authorized BMW dealer for the free remedy. Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles and to park them outside until the recall remedy is performed. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) will be searchable on October 17, 2025, to determine if a specific vehicle is part of this recall.

The manufacturer notification to dealers is scheduled to begin and end on August 27, 2025. Owner notification is planned to commence on October 17, 2025. The company has indicated that reimbursement is not necessary for repairs performed prior to this recall, as such work would typically be covered under BMW’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty program.
