According to the indictment, Wardlow is accused of committing a carjacking and, during the course of that crime, allegedly used, carried, and brandished a 9mm Glock handgun. The charges also include possession of a firearm and ammunition by a prohibited person. If convicted on all counts, Wardlow faces a potential maximum sentence of life in federal prison. Sentencing in federal cases is determined by a judge, who considers federal sentencing guidelines and other legal factors. It is important to note that an indictment is an accusation, and individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
This investigation benefited from the capabilities of the ATF’s National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN). NIBIN is a national system designed to compare ballistic evidence from crime scenes, which aids law enforcement in solving and preventing firearm-related violent crimes. This tool can link firearms across multiple incidents, potentially helping to interrupt cycles of gun violence.
The case is also part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative that brings together various levels of law enforcement and community members to combat violent crime and gun violence, aiming to enhance neighborhood safety. The Department of Justice has strengthened its PSN strategy to foster trust, support community-based violence prevention efforts, establish targeted enforcement priorities, and measure outcomes. U.S. Attorney Hayes acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the ATF and the Baltimore Police Department in this investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexander Levin is prosecuting the case.
