Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is initiating a voluntary safety recall affecting a significant number of its Ram ProMaster and Dodge Journey vehicles due to a defect that can cause the rearview camera image to be lost. This recall, submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), covers approximately 219,577 vehicles in total, with both the 2019-2021 model year Ram ProMaster and the 2019-2020 model year Dodge Journey potentially impacted. The issue stems from a suspect rearview camera that may not display an image during a backing event under certain conditions, potentially leading to a failure to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 571.111, which mandates that rearview systems default to displaying an image.

The defect can manifest as a blank, black, blue, or inverted screen where the rearview camera image should be. According to the recall report, this loss of rearview capability reduces the driver’s view of what is behind the vehicle. If a driver does not compensate for this missing visual information and fails to ensure the area behind the vehicle is clear, there is an increased risk of a vehicle crash. The investigation into this issue began in February 2024, with Chrysler reviewing engineering and manufacturing records, as well as warranty data and customer feedback, to identify the scope of the problem. The suspect period for vehicle production with the potentially faulty rearview camera began on May 2, 2019, and concluded on November 27, 2021, for Ram ProMaster vehicles, and December 21, 2020, for Dodge Journey vehicles. Vehicles produced outside these date ranges are not included in this recall. The component identified as being potentially defective is a rearview camera manufactured by Magna Electronics, with several part numbers listed as involved.
Chrysler plans to address this safety concern by replacing the rearview camera in all affected vehicles with a redesigned component. The manufacturer will begin notifying dealers about the recall on or about September 3, 2025, and owner notifications are scheduled to commence on or about September 30, 2025, with a phased rollout for the remedy. Owners will be able to determine if their specific vehicle is included in the recall by checking its Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) starting September 3, 2025. Chrysler has a general reimbursement plan on file for owners who may have incurred costs related to this issue prior to the recall announcement. For those affected, it is advised not to drive the vehicle and to park it outside until the necessary repairs can be made, as per consumer advisories related to the remedy program. The remedy component has a different design than the potentially faulty component.
