TTI Outdoor Power Equipment is recalling approximately 764,000 Ryobi brushless electric pressure washers due to a component that can overheat and burst, potentially ejecting parts and causing serious injury. The recall, announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, affects models RY142300 and RY142711VNM, which were sold between July 2017 and June 2024. Consumers who own these pressure washers are urged to stop using them immediately.

The issue stems from the pressure washer’s capacitor, which can overheat and rupture. This failure can lead to the forceful ejection of components, creating a projectile hazard for users and bystanders. TTI Outdoor Power Equipment has received 135 reports concerning overheating capacitors, with 41 of those incidents involving explosions. These explosions have resulted in 32 reported injuries, including fractures to fingers, hands, face, and eyes. The recalled pressure washers are green and feature a spray nozzle, a detergent tank with a blue cap, and accessory storage. The Ryobi brand name is visible on the front of the unit. Consumers can identify the specific model and serial number on a data plate located on the side of the motor housing.
Owners of the affected Ryobi pressure washers should visit a dedicated recall website, ryobitools.com/recall, to determine if their unit is part of the recall. Once confirmed, consumers can request a free repair kit, which includes a replacement capacitor along with instructions for installation. Proof of purchase is not required to receive the repair kit. The recalled units were sold at Home Depot and Direct Tools Factory Outlet stores across the country, as well as online through homedepot.com and directtoolsoutlet.com. The purchase price ranged from approximately $300 to $400.
