According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), efforts are underway to extradite an individual captured in Mexico who is accused of murdering Emma Schafer, a 24-year-old American woman. The DHS is collaborating with federal authorities to manage the extradition process for Calixto, who had been evading justice for two years following Schafer’s death. This development follows a previous visit by DHS Secretary Kristi Noem to Springfield, Illinois, where she addressed the impact of sanctuary policies on American communities. During that visit, Secretary Noem met with families who have lost loved ones due to crimes committed by undocumented immigrants and voiced concerns regarding policies she believes facilitate the sheltering of individuals who break the law.
DHS asserts that its law enforcement divisions are actively working to safeguard American communities from similar tragic events. The department encourages victims of crimes committed by undocumented immigrants to seek assistance through the Victims of Immigration Crime Engagement (VOICE) Office by calling 1-855-488-6423.
