Potomac Edison residential customers in Maryland are set to receive bill credits as part of a legislative initiative designed to alleviate the impact of increasing electricity costs. According to a company announcement, these credits are a direct result of the Next Generation Energy Act, which was enacted by the Maryland General Assembly in April. The program aims to provide financial assistance to households grappling with higher energy expenses, with the first round of credits scheduled for distribution this September.

The forthcoming bill credits will be issued in two installments. The initial credit is expected to appear on bills in September 2025, with a second credit to follow in either January or February of 2026. The specific amount of each credit will vary among customers, calculated based on their average electricity consumption over the preceding year. Further details regarding these credits and eligibility criteria can be found on the Potomac Edison website at firstenergycorp.com/MDEnergyReliefCredit.
To qualify for the initial credit, customers must have maintained an active residential electricity account with Potomac Edison as of June 1, 2025. Additionally, their accounts must reflect electricity usage recorded between April 1, 2024, and March 31, 2025, and the account must remain active at the time the credit is applied. Potomac Edison has stated that no action is required from eligible customers, as the credits will be automatically applied to their accounts. For those wishing to extend assistance to others facing energy payment challenges, the company suggests directing donations to local energy assistance programs, information for which is also available online.
The funding for these legislative energy relief credits originates from payments made by utilities and electricity suppliers under Maryland’s renewable energy laws. Importantly, these credits will not be passed back to customers as additional charges. Beyond this legislative relief, Potomac Edison offers a range of ongoing programs and resources throughout the year designed to help customers manage their energy usage and expenses. These include bill assistance programs tailored for income-eligible customers, individuals with medical needs, and those experiencing financial hardship, accessible via firstenergycorp.com/billassist. Furthermore, the company provides energy efficiency tools and incentives, such as the Home Energy Analyzer, whole-home energy solutions, and rebates for HVAC systems and appliances, which can be explored at energysavemd.com. Customers can also find practical advice and tips for reducing energy consumption without compromising comfort through resources available at firstenergycorp.com/saveenergy. Potomac Edison serves approximately 285,000 residential customers across seven Maryland counties and an additional 155,000 customers in West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle.
