Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. is initiating a safety recall affecting 15 units of the 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan, manufactured between April 17, 2025, and May 28, 2025. According to information submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), these vehicles may have a rear tie rod bolt that was not tightened to the correct specification during the manufacturing process. This potential defect, identified by Volkswagen as recall number 42E7, could lead to an increased risk of a crash.

The issue stems from the tightening operation of the tie rod bolt connecting to the wheel support on the rear axle assembly. During production, if the target torque was not achieved or if the programmed upper limit was exceeded, the bolt could become loose or even fracture. Volkswagen has determined that this condition could adversely affect the driver’s control of the vehicle. While Volkswagen is not aware of any crashes, fires, injuries, or deaths associated with this specific defect, owners may notice a rattling sound originating from the rear of the vehicle if the condition is present. The potentially involved vehicles were identified through manufacturing records, with 100% of this production run estimated to have the defect.

The remedy for this recall involves a replacement of the affected tie rod bolt(s) at no cost to the owner. The recall process began with dealer notification on August 15, 2025, and owners are scheduled to be notified starting October 10, 2025. Volkswagen has modified work instructions for the rear axle assembly line and implemented assembly process improvements as of June 28, 2025, and July 5, 2025, respectively, to correct the issue in production. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) for affected vehicles can be searched starting August 15, 2025. Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles and to park them outside until the recall repair is completed. Because these vehicles are within their New Vehicle Limited Warranty period, a separate reimbursement plan will not be offered.
