Three Venezuelan nationals accused of a fatal shooting and multiple robberies in Garland, Texas, are now subject to immigration detainers, ensuring they remain in custody pending trial and potential deportation. According to a release from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the individuals were previously released into the country under federal immigration policies but are now facing capital murder charges after the June 20 killing of Santiago Lopez Morales.

The incident took place at a Motel 6 in Garland, where 48-year-old Morales was found fatally shot. Investigators linked the homicide to an earlier aggravated robbery at the Deluxe Inn that same morning. The robbery victim reported being held at gunpoint, sexually assaulted, and robbed by two Hispanic men. ICE stated that the suspects admitted to targeting sex workers, believing they were less likely to report crimes. One of the suspects allegedly confessed to more than 25 robberies, while another admitted to committing additional crimes the same day as the murder.
All three suspects—Yosguar Aponte-Jimenez, Jose Trivino-Cruz, and Jesus Bellorin-Guzman—remain in custody. ICE has filed detainers with local law enforcement to prevent their release following any potential state prosecution. The suspects face a range of charges, including capital murder, aggravated robbery, and assault. DHS emphasized that these individuals entered the U.S. illegally, either by crossing the southern border or using the CBP One app, and were subsequently released under existing immigration policy.

These developments come under the administration of President Donald J. Trump, who took office following his 2024 election victory. With Kristi Noem now serving as Secretary of Homeland Security, the administration has signaled a tougher stance on border security and criminal enforcement. Local residents are not required to take any action, but the case is likely to renew public and political debate around immigration enforcement and community safety.
