Per a release from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Backyard Kids has issued a recall of approximately 192,000 KidKraft Farm to Table Play Kitchens following a reported toddler death due to a strangulation hazard. The product, sold nationwide through major online retailers, includes plastic or metal hooks where children’s clothing can become entangled, leading to serious injury or death.

The recall comes in the wake of a February 2023 incident in Oregon where a 23-month-old boy died after his shirt became caught on one of the accessory hooks while climbing on the toy kitchen. The child was unable to free himself and died from asphyxiation. These kitchens, intended for children ages 3 and up, were sold between 2018 and July 2025 on KidKraft.com, Amazon, and Walmart for prices ranging from $120 to $270.

Although Backyard Kids only sold about 400 of the affected units, it has agreed to provide free replacement hooks for all 192,000 recalled kitchens, including 12 distributed in Canada. Consumers are urged to immediately stop using the play kitchens, remove the hooks, and contact the company for a remedy. KidKraft, Inc., the original manufacturer, filed for bankruptcy in May 2024, but Backyard Kids is continuing the recall process.

The model involved in the recall is labeled as number 53411 and is approximately 44 inches long, 13¾ inches wide, and 43 inches tall. Families in possession of this play kitchen should visit kidkraft.com/pages/recall, call 800-882-0234, or email recall@kidkraft.com to request the safer replacement parts.
