Frederick County residents have a limited-time opportunity to cut energy costs and access steep discounts on rooftop solar installations. Per a July 30 press release from the county’s Division of Energy and Environment, a new program called Switch Together—developed in partnership with nonprofit Solar United Neighbors—aims to make solar power more affordable through bulk purchasing. The average household can expect to save nearly $7,000 through this initiative, but interested participants must act by early September to meet key deadlines.

We know you value local news and entertainment that is free, open, and independent. Producing high-quality, paywall-free content isn't free. It takes time, effort, and resources to keep you informed and entertained. Unlike corporate media, we don’t have deep-pocketed investors or big advertisers funding our work—we rely on you, our readers and listeners, to keep Radio Free Hub City running. We're literally running on a shoe-string budget, but keep working hard to provide as much news and entertainment as we can.
If just 5% of local area residents became paid supporters at only $5 per month, we could meet our fundraising goals and continue expanding our news coverage depth while continuing to provide free access for everyone. So, if you'd like to help us in our continuing quest to improve our coverage, please consider becoming a paying supporter.

The timing is critical due to upcoming federal policy changes. Current federal tax incentives allow homeowners and small businesses to deduct 30% of their solar installation costs, significantly reducing the financial barrier to entry. However, recent legislation will end this credit for new systems not installed by December 31, 2025. That deadline, combined with Switch Together’s group discounts, makes now a potentially optimal time for residents to go solar.
In addition to cost savings, solar installations can help property owners lower or eliminate their electric bills and maintain power during grid outages. Environmentally, the shift to solar reduces greenhouse gas emissions and alleviates strain on the local energy grid—benefits that extend beyond individual households to the wider Frederick community.
