A Senegalese national unlawfully present in the United States is now facing federal charges for assaulting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel and detainees with a dangerous weapon at an immigration facility in Manhattan. According to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the individual had previously been released into the country under the Biden administration.

Bass Ndiaye was apprehended by ICE on July 17, 2025, and brought to the 26 Federal Plaza immigration center in New York City. The following day, while in custody awaiting further processing, he allegedly seized a pair of scissors and attempted to stab multiple ICE officers. Authorities say he also tried to injure approximately a dozen other detainees before being subdued by law enforcement on site. No injuries have been reported, and ICE credited its officers with preventing further harm.
The incident has raised renewed concerns over immigration enforcement procedures, particularly regarding individuals released after initial apprehension. DHS indicated that Ndiaye had originally entered the U.S. illegally at the southern border, where he was detained by Border Patrol on October 22, 2023, and subsequently released under the prior administration.

Ndiaye now faces one federal charge of assaulting a U.S. officer with a deadly or dangerous weapon, a crime carrying a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. DHS highlighted a broader trend of increased violence against ICE officers, noting what they described as an 830% rise in assaults against agency personnel. With the Trump administration currently in office, DHS reiterated its commitment to prioritizing the removal of criminal noncitizens and ensuring the safety of Americans and law enforcement agents.
