A fugitive tied to a violent July 4 ambush on federal agents at a Texas detention facility is now in custody following a joint law enforcement operation. According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Benjamin Hanil Song—previously placed on the FBI’s Most Wanted list—was arrested Monday in Dallas after evading capture for more than a week. The attack targeted officers at the Prairieland Detention Center, where immigration detainees with serious criminal convictions were being held.

Song, a former U.S. Marine Corps reservist, was part of an armed group of at least ten people who opened fire on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents late on Independence Day. He now faces multiple federal charges, including three counts of attempted murder and three counts related to firearms use during a violent crime. His arrest brings the total number of individuals apprehended in connection with the attack to 14, with federal authorities continuing efforts to identify and detain remaining suspects.

Authorities highlighted the high-risk nature of the facility’s detainee population, which included individuals convicted of serious crimes such as rape, murder, and human trafficking. Nearly 50 members of violent gangs and 13 individuals classified as Known or Suspected Terrorists were also being held at the center on the night of the attack. The assault is part of what DHS officials describe as a broader trend of increasing violence against federal personnel.
