A federal immigration raid at agricultural sites in Ventura County, California, on July 10 has left at least one farm worker dead and several others injured, according to a statement released by the United Farm Workers (UFW). The union reported that Jaime Alanis died from injuries sustained during what it described as a “chaotic raid,” while many others remain unaccounted for. This incident has sparked renewed scrutiny over federal enforcement actions affecting farm labor communities.

The UFW disclosed that U.S. citizens were among those detained, some held on-site by federal authorities for over eight hours. Several were allegedly required to delete images and videos documenting the raid before being released. The union is currently assisting impacted families, many of whom continue to face uncertainty in the wake of the operation.
Reports from the scene also raised concerns over the presence of child labor at the affected farms. The UFW has called for independent legal representation for minors involved, emphasizing that deportation or detention is not an appropriate response to labor violations involving children. Under current law, farm workers remain excluded from many basic child labor protections, leaving young workers particularly vulnerable.
Sadly, one of the workers injured during the raid, Jaime Alanis, passed away on Saturday according to UFW.

The union condemned the raid as a violent and discriminatory action, warning that such enforcement tactics can endanger lives, dismantle families, and disrupt food supply chains. They argue that targeting agricultural workers—many of whom are essential to food production—undermines both labor rights and community safety. With the Trump administration now back in office, the federal government’s approach to immigration and labor enforcement is once again under intense scrutiny.
No statement has been issued by the Federal Government regarding the death.
