Two high-ranking members of the MS-13 gang, both wanted in El Salvador for violent crimes, were arrested this week in separate law enforcement operations in Omaha, Nebraska, and Council Bluffs, Iowa. The arrests, led by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Omaha, remove two individuals tied to murder and drug trafficking from U.S. streets and initiate proceedings for their removal to face charges abroad.

One suspect, Rene Escobar-Ochoa, was located in Omaha and is the subject of an INTERPOL Red Notice for conspiracy to commit murder and drug trafficking in El Salvador. The other individual, whose name has not been released, was apprehended in Council Bluffs and is on El Salvador’s 100 Most Wanted list for five counts of murder. Both men had previously entered the U.S. illegally and had been encountered by immigration authorities in earlier years.

These arrests underscore growing concerns from federal officials about how violent gang members are exploiting weaknesses at the southern border. Federal agents coordinated with international and domestic law enforcement partners to locate and detain the suspects. Both men are now in ICE custody as the agency works with El Salvador to carry out their deportation and ensure they are prosecuted for their alleged crimes.
