Horse owners across the country are being advised to stop using certain equine bits sold by Professional’s Choice Sports Medicine Products due to a defect that may cause the bit to break while in use, increasing the risk of riders falling. The recall affects over 1,100 Swivel Port bits from the Bob Avila collection, sold both online and in equestrian supply stores from January 2022 through March 2025.

The affected models include the Avila Santa Maria (AVB-171), Byron (AVB-612), Phoenix (AVB-621), and Sunflower (AVB-222) Swivel Port bits. These items are distinguished by their decorative silver and copper designs and metal shanks ranging from 7 to 8 inches in length. All of the recalled bits feature a Swivel Port mouthpiece, which has been identified as the component that may break during use.

Although there have been five reported instances of the bits breaking, no injuries have been reported so far. However, the potential hazard has prompted a full recall. Consumers who own these models should immediately stop using them and contact Professional’s Choice to receive a refund or a replacement. The company is covering return shipping costs and will send either a new product or a refund check after receiving the defective item.

The bits were priced between $120 and $160 and were available for purchase nationwide. They were manufactured in China and imported by Professional’s Choice Sports Medicine Products, based in Oklahoma City. Riders can also seek refunds through the retailer where they purchased the bits.
