Leesburg residents will have the chance this August to mark a significant historical milestone as the town prepares to commemorate the 200th anniversary of General Marquis de Lafayette’s 1825 visit. The month-long celebration will spotlight Lafayette’s role in the American Revolution and his symbolic farewell tour through the United States, which included a stop in Leesburg.
Lafayette, a key figure in securing American independence through his military service and diplomatic efforts with France, was hailed as “The Nation’s Guest” during his final U.S. tour. His visit to Leesburg on August 9, 1825, formed part of a larger national expression of gratitude for his contributions to liberty and the enduring alliance between the U.S. and France.

This year’s bicentennial commemoration, timed as the country approaches its 250th anniversary, will feature a range of events throughout August designed to educate and engage the public.
