A coordinated multinational operation near Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands led to the seizure of over 3,000 pounds of cocaine, demonstrating the increasing efforts of U.S. agencies like Air and Marine Operations (AMO) in combating maritime drug trafficking. The joint effort involved American, Dutch, French, and British forces and resulted in 15 arrests and the recovery of numerous bales of cocaine both onshore and in the water.

The sequence began on June 17 when French and Dutch aircraft detected two suspect vessels in Caribbean waters. Surveillance efforts tracked the targets until U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s AMO units—including a Blackhawk helicopter, Multi-role Enforcement Aircraft, and a marine interceptor boat—took over. AMO personnel detained three individuals aboard one of the boats, but the second vessel carrying contraband initially evaded capture.
By the next day, British Virgin Islands law enforcement discovered that the second boat had sunk after striking a reef. Bales of cocaine were found washed ashore near Pajaros Point, and local search and rescue crews reported recovering three people from the water, one of whom was found clinging to a floating bale.
