A previously deported criminal illegal alien from El Salvador has been charged with attempting to murder a federal prosecutor in New York, prompting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to lodge a detainer for removal proceedings. The suspect, Saul Morales-Garcia, was arrested by the Albany County Sheriff’s Office on June 17 after he allegedly attacked U.S. Attorney John A. Sarcone III with a knife. Morales-Garcia reportedly lunged at the prosecutor while yelling in a foreign language.

Morales-Garcia, who entered the U.S. illegally and has re-entered multiple times after being deported in 2010, has a criminal record spanning several states. His past arrests include theft in Virginia, driving while intoxicated in Georgia, disorderly conduct in Washington, D.C., and retail theft in Pennsylvania. ICE and Homeland Security Investigations are now pursuing additional charges against him for illegal re-entry, and federal officials have made it clear that he will face prosecution and removal.

The incident comes as ICE agents report a surge in violence during enforcement operations, with assaults on officers increasing by 500% in recent months. The Department of Homeland Security highlighted the growing risks faced by federal officers following another violent encounter earlier this week in Nebraska, where a Venezuelan national and alleged Tren de Aragua gang member, Gabriel Hurtado-Cariaco, attacked both an ICE agent and an FBI special agent during an arrest operation.

Hurtado-Cariaco, who also re-entered the country illegally after being removed in 2023, has been charged with attempted murder of a federal officer and assault causing bodily injury. During the Nebraska operation, the ICE agent suffered serious injuries after her body armor was forcibly removed and her head was slammed into the pavement. She was hospitalized and is now recovering at home. Authorities arrested the suspect shortly after he fled the scene.

These cases are part of a broader effort under the Trump-Noem administration to prioritize the arrest and removal of criminal noncitizens. Federal officials have reiterated that those who illegally enter the country and commit violent crimes will face the full weight of the law, including prosecution for attacks on law enforcement personnel.
