Tesla has announced a recall of certain 2026 Model Y vehicles following the discovery of a defect in the windshield washer system that could impede driver visibility and increase the risk of a collision. The issue affects 172 vehicles produced between April 15 and April 20, 2025, at Tesla’s Fremont Factory, with approximately 25% estimated to contain the defect. The problem was traced to a faulty batch of washer hose elbow connectors that fail to comply with federal safety standards.

The defect stems from a manufacturing error by Tesla’s supplier, SHB Malaysia Automotive Appliance, based in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. A failure to revalidate production tooling after repairs in January 2025 led to the faulty connectors. Tesla discovered the issue during routine vehicle testing in April 2025 and, after further investigation and validation tests, decided to initiate a voluntary recall on May 21, 2025. There have been no reported incidents, injuries, or warranty claims related to the defect as of May 23, 2025.
Affected vehicles may have one or both windshield washer nozzles blocked, impairing the driver’s ability to clear the windshield, which could significantly hinder visibility. Tesla will inspect and, if necessary, replace the defective washer hose elbow connectors at no cost to owners. The replacement components do not include the identified defect, and vehicles manufactured after April 20, 2025, have been fitted with corrected parts.

Notifications to Tesla service centers are scheduled for June 3, 2025, and owners will begin receiving letters by July 28, 2025. The recall is being conducted under NHTSA Recall No. 25V359 and Tesla Recall No. SB-25-17-006. As the vehicles are still covered by Tesla’s new vehicle warranty, no reimbursement for prior repairs will be necessary.
