According to federal authorities, Thompson and two accomplices orchestrated a plan to rob the restaurant’s employees not at their place of business, but as they returned home transporting the day’s earnings. On August 10, 2020, the group waited outside the family’s North Baltimore residence. As the family arrived, one co-conspirator confronted them with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun and demanded cash. The situation escalated when the armed assailant shot one victim in the leg, prompting the injured individual to return fire with a personal firearm, fatally shooting the attacker.

Thompson and the other surviving accomplice fled the scene, leaving behind the wounded co-conspirator, who later succumbed to his injuries. Thompson hid at a residence in Owings Mills after the failed robbery. Investigators from the FBI and the Baltimore Police Department identified him through evidence collected at the scene, including a shoe lost during the escape. DNA analysis confirmed a match to Thompson. Additional evidence, such as cell phone location data and text messages, further tied him to the crime.
