Volvo Trucks North America has announced a safety recall affecting 224 of its heavy-duty trucks following the discovery of a defect that could potentially lead to engine power loss or fire. The issue centers on the improper routing of power cables, which may cause chafing between a 12-volt positive cable and a 48-volt negative terminal, posing a significant safety hazard.

The affected vehicles are Volvo VN models produced between March 4, 2024, and April 21, 2025. According to the recall report filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the defect arose from insufficient routing and clipping clearances of the power cables. Volvo Trucks identified the problem after a field report noted an electrical fire linked to the cable configuration. An internal investigation confirmed the risk, leading to the determination that a safety defect was present.
Volvo Trucks indicated that the potential defect impacts 100% of the vehicles within the specified production range. The company has reported one warranty claim and one field report related to the issue, but no accidents or injuries have been associated with it. Vehicles under the manufacturer’s control have already been corrected to eliminate the defect.

As part of the remedy, affected trucks will undergo a repair process that involves re-routing and securing the power cables to ensure proper clearance. This adjustment aims to prevent contact between the cables and the ground terminal, thereby mitigating the risk of electrical shorts and fires. Dealers are scheduled to be notified by May 26, 2025, while owner notifications will begin in a phased manner starting July 18, 2025. Volvo Trucks advises owners not to drive the affected vehicles and to park them outside as a precaution until the repairs are completed.
