Ford Motor Company has initiated a safety recall of over 273,000 vehicles across its 2022 to 2024 model year Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator lines, citing a potential defect in the front brake lines that could increase the risk of a crash. According to documentation filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately one percent of the vehicles may be affected by a condition where the front brake lines are routed in such a way that they could contact the engine air cleaner outlet pipe, potentially resulting in a leak.

The issue was first flagged in February 2025 during a review of increased brake system warranty claims related to the 2022 Lincoln Navigator. A subsequent investigation revealed that changes made to the radiator hose stowage process during engine installation at Ford’s Kentucky Truck Plant had only been implemented starting November 20, 2024. Vehicles produced prior to this change may have brake lines that were bent during installation, which could allow contact with other engine components. Ford identified 223,315 Expedition units and 50,474 Navigator units produced between April 15, 2021 and November 20, 2024 as potentially impacted.
A leaking brake line could result in increased brake pedal travel and reduced braking effectiveness. If brake fluid loss occurs rapidly or is complete, the vehicle could require a longer distance to stop, posing a heightened risk of a crash. Although there have been 45 warranty claims, two field reports, and two customer service reports related to this issue, Ford has not received any reports of accidents or injuries.

Owners of affected vehicles will begin receiving notifications by mail starting May 26, 2025. They will be instructed to bring their vehicles to Ford or Lincoln dealerships for inspection and, if necessary, replacement of the brake line or air cleaner outlet pipe at no charge. Ford has also outlined a reimbursement program for owners who may have already paid out-of-pocket for repairs prior to the recall. Dealer notifications began on May 14, 2025.
