Between 2017 and 2022, Hurley served as pastor at Miracle Temple Church in Lothian, Maryland. In 2020, a fire at the church’s parsonage led to a $350,000 insurance payout. Rather than directing the funds to the church, Hurley deposited $347,000 into his personal account on March 31, 2021, and used the money for personal expenses. When filing his 2021 Maryland state tax return, Hurley failed to declare the misappropriated funds, resulting in $33,595.05 in unpaid taxes.

He was convicted on December 4, 2024, of filing a false tax return. In a separate case related to the theft, Hurley pleaded guilty to theft on March 11, 2025. That case was prosecuted by the State’s Attorney’s Office for Anne Arundel County.
