National Police Week begins Sunday, May 11, with a series of ceremonies and events across the country recognizing the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers. The week, observed annually in May, centers on honoring those who have died in the line of duty. This year, 345 names were engraved on the Memorial’s walls, including officers who died in the past year as well as those whose deaths occurred in prior years but had not previously been recorded. The Memorial now holds the names of 24,412 fallen officers, dating back to the first known line-of-duty death in 1791. These additions reflect ongoing efforts to ensure every officer’s sacrifice is remembered, including those whose stories were uncovered only recently.
The origins of National Police Week trace back to 1962, when President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which it falls as National Police Week. The week was established through a joint resolution of Congress and serves as a time of remembrance and recognition for law enforcement professionals who have died while serving their communities.

Local departments, such as the Chambersburg Police Department in Pennsylvania, are using the occasion to thank their officers for their ongoing commitment to public safety. Officers in Chambersburg work long shifts and often put duty above personal time to respond to emergencies and community needs. Community members are encouraged to show appreciation through simple words of thanks, a gesture that can have a meaningful impact during this commemorative week.
