The enforcement campaign is backed by funding from the Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration’s Highway Safety Office. Patrols will focus on major routes and highways known for higher rates of impaired driving incidents. These efforts are intended to reduce traffic-related injuries and fatalities by ensuring law enforcement is visible and responsive during a holiday weekend known for alcohol-related celebrations.
State Police plan to target specific regions across Maryland with tailored enforcement strategies. In the Eastern Region, troopers will monitor routes including U.S. 13, 50, and 404, while Central Region patrols will focus on areas such as Interstates 495 and 95. Western Region units will be present in crash-prone areas, particularly around Cumberland and Hagerstown. Northern and Southern Region troopers will also deploy to highways and local roads with a history of DUI incidents.

The heightened enforcement comes amid sobering statistics: Maryland reports an average of 158 deaths and over 2,700 injuries each year due to impaired driving. In the last five years alone, nearly 800 people have died in alcohol-involved crashes statewide. Authorities are urging residents to plan ahead, use public transit, taxis, or rideshare services, and avoid getting behind the wheel after drinking.
