Volvo Trucks North America has announced the recall of 102 heavy-duty vehicles following the discovery of improperly torqued fasteners in turbo compound units, a flaw that could lead to engine failure and increased crash risk. The affected vehicles include select 2022 to 2025 models of the Volvo VN and New VN, with production spanning from April 2021 to November 2024.

The issue was identified in turbo compound units installed during manufacturing or servicing, where idler gear bracket fasteners may have been inadequately tightened or lacked documented torque data. A loosened fastener can cause engine damage and potentially disable the vehicle. An illuminated engine warning light and rough engine operation may be early indicators of the problem.
The root cause was attributed to insufficient manufacturing process controls and gaps in torque application documentation. A formal investigation began in November 2024 after an engine failure was traced back to the faulty component. By late January 2025, service programs were initiated to inspect and replace affected parts. The defect was officially confirmed by Volvo’s Product Safety Committee on April 10, 2025, followed by the recall filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) a week later.

Although there have been 63 field reports related to the defect, no accidents or injuries have been reported. The recalled vehicles will undergo inspections to identify the suspect turbo compound units, which will be replaced at no cost under Volvo’s reimbursement plan filed with NHTSA. The manufacturing issue was corrected on November 26, 2024, with updated torque tooling implemented on the assembly line. Dealer notifications are set to begin by April 24, 2025, and owners will be contacted starting June 11, 2025.
