All 24 public school systems in Maryland have affirmed their commitment to federal civil rights laws following a request from the U.S. Department of Education earlier this month. The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) coordinated a response to a federal Title VI compliance request by gathering certification forms from every local education agency (LEA) in the state. These certifications were formally submitted to federal officials, confirming each district’s commitment to upholding Title VI, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, or national origin in programs receiving federal funding.

The federal request, received by MSDE on April 3, asked the state to confirm both receipt of the compliance documentation and that all LEAs would adhere to the requirements set forth under Title VI. The state swiftly acted to ensure full participation by all local school systems. Each LEA submitted signed certification forms that affirm legal compliance and reflect a continued effort to protect the rights of Maryland students under existing civil rights law and precedent.

State Superintendent Dr. Carey M. Wright and State Board of Education President Dr. Joshua Michael jointly reiterated the state’s dedication to equitable education. In their formal statement, the leaders emphasized Maryland’s commitment to making schools inclusive and respectful of all students’ identities, noting that the state’s diversity strengthens each community. They highlighted the importance of maintaining safe and equitable educational environments across all demographics, including race, ethnicity, gender, disability, and socioeconomic status.
