Volkswagen Group of America has issued a recall affecting over 5,600 units of its 2025 ID. BUZZ model due to a noncompliance issue related to brake system warning indicators. The recall, filed under NHTSA number 25V-233, stems from software irregularities in the instrument cluster that may fail to meet federal safety display standards.

The issue involves the vehicles displaying incorrect telltales for brake system malfunctions. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 135 requires a red-colored “BRAKE” indicator or a specific icon from FMVSS 101. However, affected vehicles instead show an amber ISO-standard symbol—an exclamation mark within a circle, flanked by arcs—or a smaller “ABS” lettering that does not meet the required 3.2 mm height. These deviations may cause driver confusion and potentially lead to ignored warnings, increasing the risk of a crash.
All 5,637 vehicles identified in the recall were manufactured between September 9, 2024, and February 11, 2025. The discrepancy was discovered during internal testing in February 2025. Volkswagen traced the problem to incorrect software coding in the data container of the instrument cluster. Though an inconsequentiality petition was considered, it was ultimately deemed unnecessary as affected vehicles were already scheduled to receive a software update under a previously planned service action campaign.

To address the issue, Volkswagen will update the data container software at no cost to vehicle owners. Because the vehicles are still under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty, no reimbursement plan is being offered. Dealer notifications began on April 11, 2025, with owner notifications scheduled for June 6, 2025. Production corrections are expected to take effect in calendar week 16 of 2025.
