The GAO emphasized that implementing these recommendations could significantly enhance the effectiveness and accountability of State Department operations. These changes could help prevent mismanagement, reduce the risk of fraud, and ensure that federal funds are spent in accordance with legal requirements. The GAO has issued similar recommendations to other departments since 2015 as part of a broader government-wide initiative to improve efficiency and performance.
