Hosted by Woodland Park High School, the event is also open to students from Woodland Park Middle School. It aims to motivate students by highlighting the achievements of Ayers, a Colorado native who considers both Colorado Springs and Divide home, and who graduated from Woodland Park High School. Organizers hope her success story will inspire students in the small town to pursue careers in science and space.
Astronauts like Ayers have continuously lived and worked aboard the International Space Station for over two decades. From the orbiting laboratory, they conduct essential research, test advanced technologies, and hone skills vital to deeper space missions. The crew communicates with NASA’s Mission Control Center in Houston 24 hours a day via the Near Space Network, part of the agency’s Space Communications and Navigation system.
