A federal grand jury has indicted a 35-year-old inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Schuylkill for allegedly possessing an improvised weapon while incarcerated. The incident occurred earlier this year, and the charge carries the potential for additional prison time and penalties.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, Jamal Townsend was found in possession of a sharpened piece of plastic on February 20, 2025. The item, approximately seven inches long and fitted with a cloth handle, was allegedly designed to be used as a weapon. Townsend was formally indicted on March 27, 2025.
The investigation into the matter was conducted jointly by the Federal Bureau of Prisons and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Robin Zenzinger. If convicted, Townsend faces up to five years in prison, a fine, and a period of supervised release.

As with all federal cases, any sentence would be determined by a judge in accordance with federal law and sentencing guidelines. It is important to note that an indictment is not proof of guilt, and Townsend remains presumed innocent unless proven otherwise in court.
